Fertility Tourism in China

I’ve been watching this trend for two years. Fertility tourism in China is not a niche topic anymore. It’s a billion-dollar segment that connects directly to premium beauty and wellness spending.

I am Rebecca Li, experienced marketer with 8 years experienced with beauty Brands.

Chinese women traveling for fertility treatments, or staying in China’s growing medical tourism hubs like Hainan, spend significantly on skincare, supplements, and wellness products during their journey. Brands that work with us started paying attention to this audience in 2024. By 2026, it’s a real acquisition channel.

What Is Fertility Tourism in China?

Fertility tourism means traveling, domestically or internationally, specifically for reproductive health treatments. In China, Hainan Free Trade Port has become a hotspot. The government opened it to foreign medical services. Clinics from Japan, Germany, and Spain now operate there.

The numbers tell the story. China’s fertility services market is projected to reach $12.7 billion USD by 2027. The average fertility tourist spends 30 to 45 days in their destination. During that time, they shop. A lot.

What do they buy? Prenatal supplements. Clean beauty products. Hormone-safe skincare. Fragrance-free formulas. Brands that understand this buying mindset win.

The Beauty Angle Nobody Talks About

I’ve seen cosmetics brands completely miss the connection. Fertility tourism is not just a medical trend. It’s a lifestyle shift. Women going through fertility treatments become extremely conscious about what they put on their skin.

They avoid parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrances. They seek clean, ingredient-focused products. They research. They ask KOLs on Xiaohongshu for recommendations. This is where your brand needs to be.

Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) is the number one discovery platform for this audience. Search for “备孕护肤” (skincare while trying to conceive) and you find millions of posts. Women share their routines. They ask what’s safe. They trust peer recommendations over advertising.

2026 Platform Data You Need

Xiaohongshu has over 300 million monthly active users as of Q1 2026. The fertility and prenatal wellness category grew 67% year-on-year in 2025. Posts tagged “备孕” (preparing for pregnancy) get consistently high engagement.

Douyin is the second front. I’ve seen brands run very effective campaigns on Douyin targeting women aged 25 to 38 in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. The fertility tourism audience skews educated, urban, and high-income. They convert well.

Tmall remains the purchase destination. Brands that build their presence on Tmall with a dedicated clean beauty or prenatal-safe product line see strong repeat purchase rates. The keyword strategy here is specific. “无香精” (fragrance-free), “孕期可用” (safe during pregnancy), “温和配方” (gentle formula). These drive organic traffic.

Ingredient Trends in the Fertility Wellness Beauty Segment

I track what sells. Here are the ingredients that Chinese consumers in this segment look for in 2026:

  • Bakuchiol: The retinol alternative. Marketed as safe for pregnancy. Growing fast on XHS.
  • Centella Asiatica: Already dominant in skincare. In the fertility segment, it’s positioned as calming, redness-reducing, hormone-neutral.
  • Niacinamide: Still strong. The pregnancy-safe positioning works well in China.
  • Plant-based squalane: Olive or sugarcane-derived. Clean label matters to this audience.
  • Hyaluronic acid: Baseline hydration. Multi-weight formulas get good reviews.

Avoid anything linked to hormonal disruption in your messaging. This audience is hyper-aware. One bad review on XHS about parabens and your brand loses trust fast.

AI Discovery and How It Changes the Game

In 2026, AI search is changing how Chinese consumers find products. Douyin’s AI recommendations, Tmall’s AI-powered product matching, and Xiaohongshu’s AI content discovery all push relevant products to users based on content they interact with.

Brands that work with us now build content specifically to get picked up by these recommendation engines. That means product descriptions with clear ingredient claims, posts with specific keywords, and KOL content that uses the right vocabulary. It’s not enough to list your product. You need content that answers the exact questions this audience types into search.

How Foreign Cosmetics Brands Enter This Market

I’ve helped European and American brands enter China’s beauty market for over 15 years. The fertility wellness segment is one of the cleaner entry points right now.

The competition is still limited. Most Chinese domestic brands focus on general skincare or traditional Chinese medicine ingredients. The clean Western beauty, pregnancy-safe positioning is relatively unoccupied.

The path to market: start with KOL seeding on Xiaohongshu, build organic content around your clean credentials, then launch on Tmall or a cross-border Tmall Global store. Run Douyin ads targeting the right demographic. Scale from there.

Our Tmall partner agency service handles the full setup, from store creation to operations. For brands new to China, this is the fastest route to revenue.

The fertility tourism wave in China is real. The beauty spending attached to it is significant. Brands that move now will build a position before this segment gets crowded.
