  3. The shop acts as a representative of a multi-brand marketplace that is owned by the merchant who opened the shop. Tmall approval is required.

Enter Tmall – Frequently asked question

  • What is the difference between Tmall & Tmall Global? Tmall Global does not require you to set up a Chinese bank account or company. If you were selling to Chinese consumers prior to Tmall Global, this was required. It makes it a good option for brand wanting to test the waters.
  • Do I have to choose Tmall to sell goods in China? Tmall is not the only popular e-commerce site in China. There are many e-commerce sites that could be more appropriate for your company in terms not only of marketing strategies but also in terms price. Tmall is the market leader in China, so selling products there can be very expensive and prohibitive for smaller businesses. We recommend that you start your business on Tmall if you have the funds. Your journey will be rewarding if you work in your store, off-site marketing and on-site.
  • What is a Tmall partner and why should you choose to work with one? Tmall’s Partner Program allows Alibaba to provide services and platforms for sellers through trusted third parties like agencies like ours. These partners can assist with logistics, marketing, IP protection technology development, content localization, etc.

Tmall is the preferred choice for large brands who want to establish an identity on the platform without having to take on the risks of consumer interaction. Although Taobao is more accessible to smaller companies than Tmall, it has more customers and therefore more growth potential. Taobao could be the right platform for your company if you believe it can best position its business on a platform that is known for its spontaneous and impulsive buying habits.
